A virtual bail hearing Wednesday for a Florida 17-year-old accused of perpetrating a widespread Twitter hack last month fell victim to “Zoombombing,” the Tampa Bay Times reported, as uninvited guests played loud rap music, screams and pornography as the judge struggled to issue a ruling amid the disruptions.
The hearing was called for the court to consider a request to lower bail for Graham Ivan Clark, who has been held in jail on $725,000 bail since being arrested Friday.
However, Hillsborough Circuit Judge Christopher C. Nash was forced to shut down the online hearing after someone broadcast pornographic material. It’s an example of “Zoombombing,” a disruptive intrusion into a webcam meeting by someone uninvited.
Nash soon resumed the hearing, but people using screen names that resembled employees at media outlets like CNN and BBC News continued to interrupt the proceedings, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Eventually, Nash ruled against the request to lowerClark’sbail, but did lift a stipulation that the teenager has to prove his assets are not the proceeds of criminal acts.
KEY BACKGROUND
The teenager was arrested last week and charged with 30 counts of felonies for hacking, fraud and identity theft. He’s one of three young men accused of being behind a mass Twitter hacking spree last month in which accounts of celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Elon Musk and Barack Obama were taken over and used to post messages about a bitcoin scam. Clark allegedly made $100,000 from the hacking. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday. Zoom’s security system has been criticized during the pandemic, as more people have used the service to work from home.
