The Wimbledon Championship tennis tournament that was scheduled to be held in June has been cancelled for the first time since World War 2.
Wimbledon which was first established in 1877 making it the oldest tennis tournament has only ever been cancelled during World War 1 and World War 2.

The tennis tournament was scheduled to take place over two weeks starting June 29 but as England and the rest of the world are currently battling te COVID-19pandemic, organisers ave decided to cancel the event once again.
All England Club stated that it would be impossible to postpone the Championship tournament due to the amount of preparation required to set up Wimbledon and there is also the issue of other tennis competitions scheduled later this year.
The French Open which was meant o have taken place on May 24 has already been postponed by four months further putting pressure on the rest of this year’s tennis calendar.
Spectators who have already purchased tickets to for Wimbledon will have the option of either getting a full refund or having the choice of deferring the tickets to next year for the same day on the same courts.
The statement released by All England Club said that they had decided to cancel the event for not only the health and safety of all those involved but also for the “broader responsibility to society’s efforts to tackle this global challenge to our way of life”.

With England currently under strict lockdown alongside many other parts of the world, it would be almost impossible for tennis players as well as organisers to begin preparations for Wimbledon in time for the event.
Even if it were postponed, it would still take some months after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic has ended before sports returned as normal.
