Nicki Minaj‘s mom Carol Maraj, penned a sweet tribute to her grandson, affectionately nicknamed “Papa Bear,” for his first birthday. The Maraj matriarch shared a close-up photo of Papa Bear on Instagram on October 1 to wish him a happy birthday with a poem. It read:
“I look into your eyes and I linger there, what striking good looks Papa Bear. May you grow up to live against the status quo, but trust in Jesus as you go. May you make a difference in your generation, I pray. It’s a pleasure to wish you a Happy 1st Birthday.”
The rapper, 38, welcomed Papa Bear, her first child, with husband Kenneth Petty at the end of September 2020. Nicki announced her pregnancy in July of that year with an Instagram photo of a pregnancy photo shoot, shot by photographer David LaChapelle. “#Preggers. Love. Marriage. Baby carriage. Overflowing with excitement & gratitude,” she wrote at the time. “Thank you all for the good wishes.”
Nicki Minaj famously skipped the 2021 Met Gala on September 13 after she revealed that she caught COVID-19. She then admitted that she has not been vaccinated against the virus and added that the positive COVID-19 diagnosis was also the reason behind her absence from the MTV Video Music Awards.
“I was prepping for VMAs then I shot a video & guess who got COVID? Do u know what it is not to be able to kiss or hold your tiny baby for over a week?” she tweeted, referencing her 11-month-old son, known only as “Papa Bear” by her fans. “A baby who is only used to his mama?” Later, she explained why she had not been vaccinated.
