European Union (EU) Labour Commissioner, Nicolas Schmit, has mocked Brexit Britain for its self-inflicted supply chain crisis caused by “idiotic” restrictions on labour markets.
Schmit, highlighting the putative reason behind the supply chain crisis across the UK believes that the problems primarily stem from stricter rules for foreign workers which are in place in the UK.
Speaking to Germany press agency DPA, Schmit said that the visa regulations implemented by the UK translate to “a direct example of how idiotic it is to say you will send foreign workers home”.
According to him, the EU would experience similar issues which the UK is facing if worker mobility were curtailed.
Having broken free from the EU with the Brexit agreement, more stringent immigration rules have made it difficult for foreign nationals to work in the UK.
Schmit believes the new rules have significantly impacted the workforce; and, consequently the supply chain.
The shortage of HGV drivers has wreaked havoc across the UK in recent weeks, with empty supermarket shelves and an acute fuel crisis a precursor of what is to come if the Brexit government is unable to nip the crisis in its bud.
Containers at the Felixstowe, the UK’s biggest port have also been diverted elsewhere due to a backlog that has ensued in recent weeks.
In response, the Government has contemplated granting up to 5,000 visas due to the shortages in the country.
However, only a handful of these visas have been issued so far.
With regard to the visas that have been issued in the UK, the workers are not expected to enter the country for at least another month.
Meanwhile, Boris Johnson’s Government has pledged to rejig the cabotage rules which are in place in the UK.
The cabotage rules imply that there is a limitation placed on how many jobs a haulier can make in a foreign country.
