Britney Spears’ conservatorship has been terminated after 13 years, by a California court. “The court finds and determines that the conservatorship of the person and the estate of Britney Jean Spears is no longer required,” Judge Brenda Penny rule on Friday afternoon.
The Nov. 12 hearing was brief with all parties agreeing to the termination. The pop star did not attend the hearing. Mathew Rosengart, the singer’s attorney, began his presentation to the judge by reading a passage from his client’s June testimony in which she stated that she wishes for the conservatorship to end without evaluation. “The record is clear,” Rosengart said. “The time has come today.”
Following the ruling, hundreds of Spears supporters erupted in emotional cheers outside the courthouse.
The Grammy winner’s court victory comes after a tumultuous legal battle with her father, Jamie Spears, who was suspended as her conservator last month. He had been in charge of her finances and medical decisions since 2008. The two had several court appearances over the past year, but things reached a boiling point during the singer’s two emotional testimonies over the summer.
