Talking about the life and poetry of Gurudev Tagore, Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter that he was writing poems since he was only 8 years old and by the time he was 16 years old, he was writing short novels and also writing plays. He was a social reformer, and also played a role in India’s freedom struggle. He established the Visva-Bharati Vishwa Vidyalaya at Shanti-Niketan.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1931 for his poetry collection ‘Gitanjali’. He was the first non-European poet to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Rabindronath Thakur was born on May 9, 1861 in Kolkata. His mother Shardadevi and father Devendranath were both religious reformers and social reformers. But Rabindranath’s mother passed away when he was still a child and he was raised by maids.
Rabindranath wanted to write poetry, but his father wanted to become a barrister, so he was sent to England. Shakespeare’s plays were very popular there. They left their studies there incomplete. He came to India and became immersed in literature and Sadhana. His collection of Gitanjali poetry was amazing. That is why he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He composed the national anthem of India ‘Jana Gana Man Adhinayak’. When East Pakistan, formed after the partition of India, became an independent nation as Bangladesh in 1971, his poem ‘Aamar…Sonar…Bangla’, dedicated to Bengal, was adopted as the national anthem of Bangladesh.
