In a move aimed at streamlining regulations and supporting economic growth, the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has revealed an indefinite extension to the use of CE marking for businesses.
This extension, which applies to 18 DBT regulations, is part of a comprehensive package of smarter regulations designed to alleviate burdens on businesses and cut through unnecessary barriers and red tape.
Following extensive consultation with industry stakeholders, British firms will now have the opportunity to continue employing CE marking alongside UKCA.
The Business Secretary took swift action to prevent a potential disruption in December 2024, when the UKCA marking system was scheduled to take effect. This intervention ensures that businesses no longer face uncertainty regarding regulations and can reduce unnecessary costs, allowing them to focus on innovation and expansion.
Business Minister Kevin Hollinrake expressed the government’s commitment to reducing bureaucracy and providing certainty for firms.
He stated, “By extending the use of CE marking across the UK, businesses can dedicate their resources to job creation and bolstering the economy.”Industry representatives have welcomed the announcement.
Tina McKenzie, Policy Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), acknowledged the continued recognition of CE-marked products, noting that it will give small firms the necessary time to adjust to the UKCA marking system and concentrate on expanding their operations both domestically and internationally.
Stephen Phipson, CEO of Make UK, the manufacturers’ organization, hailed the decision as pragmatic and sensible.
He emphasized that this move will safeguard manufacturers’ competitiveness, attract investment to the UK, and instill confidence in conducting business within the country.
Make UK has actively collaborated with the UK Government to advocate for this decision and is delighted that ongoing engagement has yielded such a positive outcome.

The extension provides businesses with flexibility and choice, allowing them to select either the UKCA or CE approach when selling products in Great Britain.
