In anticipation of events commemorating the nine-year anniversary of the atrocities committed by Daesh against the Yazidi people, the UK has formally recognized acts of genocide perpetrated by Daesh in 2014.
This decision follows a ruling by the German Federal Court of Justice, which found a former Daesh fighter guilty of acts of genocide and crimes against humanity.
Minister of State for the Middle East, Lord Ahmad, made the announcement, emphasizing the immense suffering endured by the Yazidi population at the hands of Daesh and the ongoing impact of these atrocities.
He stressed the importance of justice and accountability for those whose lives have been devastated, stating that this historic acknowledgment strengthens the UK’s commitment to ensuring compensation and meaningful justice for the Yazidi people.
The UK will continue to play a leading role in eradicating Daesh, including efforts to rebuild communities affected by its terrorism and leading global initiatives against its toxic propaganda.
It is the UK’s stance that determinations of genocide should be made by competent courts rather than governments or non-judicial bodies.
The acknowledgment is based on the judgment of the German Federal Court of Justice, which found a former Daesh fighter guilty of acts of genocide and crimes against humanity committed in Iraq.
The UK now officially recognizes five instances of genocide: the Holocaust, Rwanda, Srebrenica, acts of genocide in Cambodia, and the genocide against the Yazidi people.
During a visit to Iraq earlier this year, Minister Lord Ahmad welcomed the progress made with the Yazidi Survivors Law, which aims to provide reparations to survivors.
The UK remains committed to supporting Iraq in fully implementing the law and ensuring that survivors receive comprehensive support and access to justice.
A commemoration event, organized by Yazidi civil society organizations, will take place in Baghdad and will be attended by international stakeholders.
The UK’s Ambassador to Iraq, Steve Hitchen, will be present to confirm the UK’s acknowledgment.
