Lucy Letby, the former neonatal nurse who was recently handed a whole life order after being convicted of the murders of seven babies and attempting to kill six others, has lodged an appeal.
Many are questioning the motive behind her heinous crimes, as well as her decision to appeal. According to clinical and forensic psychologist Dr Naomi Murphy, Letby’s appeal is not only a way for her to ‘save face’ with her devoted parents but also to protect the friends and family who have stood by her.

Dr Murphy, who has spent 25 years working with serious violent and sexually violent criminals, explains that individuals convicted of serious offences often fear isolation and alienation from their loved ones.
They may maintain their innocence for years, sometimes even decades until their parents pass away. Only then, when there is no longer the fear of disappointing their family, do they admit their guilt.
Letby’s denial of her crimes may also provide some protection for her in prison. As a Category A prisoner at HMP Low Newton, she is considered to have committed one of the most despicable offences within the prison hierarchy. This would likely attract hostility and even violence from other inmates. Dr Murphy suggests that by maintaining her innocence, Letby can allow the public attention and animosity to fade over time.

Despite the unpleasantness of having her actions scrutinized publicly once again, Letby may still hold onto the hope that she can undo everything through her appeal. Dr Murphy explains that this hope may be what keeps her going and gives her some solace in the face of the overwhelming evidence against her.
During Letby’s trial, her parents Susan and John, who relocated to Manchester to be near the court, struggled with the details of their daughter’s evil actions. They vehemently protested her conviction, unable to reconcile the image of their loving daughter with the monster she had become. Dr Murphy’s insights shed light on why Letby’s loved ones continue to support her, despite the damning evidence presented in court.
