The #somewomenneedtowalk movement has been a strong advocate for women’s right to safety under the quarantine laws. What has been alarming is the rise of violence against women during the quarantine.
In the first two weeks of quarantine, the UK reported that women are being killed at three times more than the average rate. These statistics are enough to make anyone’s stomach turn. The thought that staying safe and staying home is the best thing for survival right now, brings a bitter thought that women are not safe even at home.

Violence against women is a subject that is hardly visited with the seriousness which it deserves. The one repetitive thing the world has done is to preach to women on protecting themselves and not going out alone in public.
There is a deep-rooted culture of violence on women’s bodies. Whether this is because of their physical bodies, or because of the centuries-old treatment of women as secondary to men. Perhaps it is a combination of both.
The conversation about this violence should really be put into more urgent action and further scrutiny. But when is this going to happen? It will certainly take more than hashtags and a few articles reporting women we cannot save now.
