Expressing your emotions means different things to different people. As different our life experiences are, so are we different about expressing our emotions as people.
Crying is one of these emotions which we tend to differ in expressing. Some people cry when they are happy. Some people cry when they are sad. Some people cry for reasons most cannot understand.
Different cultures perceive crying differently too. Some cultures see crying as a sign of weakness. Some see men crying as a sign of weakness. Another perspective is that crying is a sign of strength and emotional maturity.
What we have most in common though is that when people ask us “how are you?” We always answer with “I’m good, how are you?”. And in turn we expect an ” I’m good too”.
There seems to be no room to expressing our innermost feelings in our day to day lives. Even saying that makes me recoil inside. Imagine if every time you asked someone how they are, that they really told you exactly how they felt in that moment?

So hearing about others’ emotions is just as hard as opening up on our own. The idea of emotional intelligence has come to be measured as important as one’s IQ.
How do we know how to navigate our emotions in the present reality of culture and history. What about when different cultures see concerned? Cultural tensions have at times the resulted in violence.
Under the Covid19 pandemic we have come to face death as a collective. Some families have had to grieve whilst staying put.

Some families have not even gotten to bury their loved ones. How do these families begin to process the loss of a loved one under times so unfamiliar to our daily practises?
What is sure is that the walls get smaller the longer we must stay indoors. There is also no cure in sight, although the fight continues. We need to keep a mindfulness to our emotions and how we react to our environments.
So say what is on your mind with an awareness of how it will affect those around you. Write down your emotions if you cannot express them. Call your close friends if you cannot see them. Expressing your emotions is important.
