A 25-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Southend MP Sir David Amess, who was fatally killed during a constituency surgery on Friday.
Ali Harbi Ali carried out the heinous crime at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, pouncing and stabbing Sir David Amess several times while visitors waited to see him.
Paramedics had tried to stabilise the Conservative MP upon arrival, but he died before the first responders could take him to a hospital.
Ali was apprehended at the scene of the crime on suspicion of murder. He is also facing terrorism charges.
“The CPS has authorised charges against Ali Harbi Ali for the murder of MP Sir David Amess on Friday 15 October 2021,” Nick Price, of the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement.
“We will submit to the court that this murder has a terrorist connection, namely that it had both religious and ideological motivations.”
“He has also been charged with the preparation of terrorist acts. This follows a review of the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police in its investigation.”
“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Ali are active and that he has a right to a fair trial.”
The murder of the veteran lawmaker has sent shockwaves around the country, particularly in view of an emerging pattern after MP Jo Cox was killed in similar circumstances five years ago.
Police are now working with parliamentary authorities to explore means of beefing up security for MPs during public appearances.
Political figures across partisan lines including Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer have extolled Sir David for his bravery to speak for the vulnerable, a value he enthroned in his many years in Parliament.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson described Sir David as “one of the kindest, nicest, most gentle people in politics.”
Flags on government buildings and outside Parliament were flown at half-mast as a mark of respect to Sir David Amess.
A small crowd of well-wishers also joined the Prime Minister and the Labour Party leader to lay flowers outside the church in honour of the deceased parliamentarian.
