According to The Sun, the former England midfielder could return to the dugout at St James’s Park, with talks potentially starting as soon as this week.
Former Borussia Dortmund manager, Lucien Favre is also on the shortlist and has been tipped by the bookies as the favourite to get the job.
The 63-year old was sacked by Dortmund last December and is still without a job.
Favre had turned down Crystal Palace in the summer but would be tempted at the prospect of managing Newcastle, with the Magpies now the world’s wealthiest club courtesy of a Saudi takeover.
Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers and Brighton’s Graham Potter have also been mooted as possible options.
Current gaffer, Steve Bruce led training on Monday in front of Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi following their visit to the club’s headquarters.
The players and backroom staff were all in high spirits as they met their new owners, though Bruce did not feature in any of the club footage.
Newcastle United’s assistant manager, Graeme Jones is still expected to take charge against Tottenham on Sunday once the club finalises talks on Bruce’s multi-million-pound payoff.
