The Nottingham police have been given a tight timeframe to conclude their questioning of Valdo Calocane, the alleged attacker involved in the tragic knife attacks resulting in the deaths of three individuals.
Barnaby Webber, Grace Kumar, and Ian Coates were fatally stabbed in separate incidents in the city earlier this week.
Valdo Calocane, aged 31, was swiftly apprehended under suspicion of murder less than two hours after the initial horrifying attacks took place. Since then, he has remained in police custody while officers continue their investigations.
Authorities have been granted additional time to interrogate the suspect, with a deadline set until the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Although it was revealed that Calocane attended the University of Nottingham, the police have stated that they do not believe this fact is connected to the attacks. The 31-year-old graduated last year with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering.
In addition to the fatal stabbings, one man sustained critical injuries when the alleged assailant attempted to run him over with a stolen van. The injured individual, identified locally as Wayne Birkett, is currently in hospital, fighting for his life.
Shaun, Wayne’s brother, shared his concern, stating that they are anxiously awaiting Wayne’s recovery. Wayne remains unconscious, and his family is deeply worried for his well-being.
Nottinghamshire Police announced that they have self-referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
This step was taken after acknowledging that “a marked police car followed behind the suspect’s van for a short distance before it collided with the two pedestrians.”
During a heart-wrenching vigil held on Wednesday night, the fathers of Barnaby and Grace, David and Dr. Sanjoy Kumar, respectively, struggled to hold back tears as they paid tribute to their beloved children.
David emotionally shared his grief over losing his “baby boy,” while Dr. Sanjoy Kumar urged the gathered crowd to care for one another.
The series of violent incidents began when the police were alerted to Ilkeston Road shortly after 4 am on Tuesday, following reports of “blood-curdling screams.” This was the tragic moment when Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar were fatally stabbed while walking home from a nightclub.
Shortly thereafter, Ian Coates, a 65-year-old school caretaker, was allegedly killed by the same assailant in a location only streets away from the initial attacks on the students.
Subsequently, the police were dispatched to Milton Street, where Ian’s stolen van was used to run over three individuals. One man suffered critical injuries, while two others sustained minor injuries.
Prior to these events, The SurgeZirc UK exclusively reported that the alleged perpetrator was thwarted in an attempt to break into a hostel.
CCTV footage captured a figure dressed in black trying to climb through a ground-floor window at Seely Hirst House on Mapperley Road at 4:08 am on Tuesday, mere minutes after two bodies were discovered four miles away.
SurgeZirc UK obtained exclusive footage showing a man named Trevor punching Calocane in the face, preventing him from entering through the window. The hooded assailant reportedly screamed “Let me in” as he made a desperate attempt to gain access.
