There have been many cases where the internet has given way to bullying and toxic online behaviour. What we tend to forget is that the same space can be used for the opposite effects.
Now is the time to start building online communities that can nurture our connections with the world instead of putting each other down.
There are many communities that have formed online in order to support and inspire each other. Here is a list of online communities that you can join to keep you inspired this shutdown:
- Cafemom.com is an online community for moms and parents alike. If you are a dad, then Cafedad.com may be more of your style!
- AARP is a community dedicated to seniors. Senior citizens become marginalised the older they get. This group exists for them to make connections and talk about their experiences.
- Domestic Abuse Survivors on Facebook is a page dedicated to sharing stories of women who have survived abuse. This may, of course, be a trigger for some women so do tread carefully.
- GirlBoss is a community dedicated to supporting young women who want to build their own businesses. With advice from other women and their experiences. You are sure to learn a thin two.
If you cannot find a community that you feel caters to what you have in mind, why not start your own? You would be surprised by the number of people who will relate to stories you felt only unique to you.
