Jakarta: India’s Satvik Sairaj and Chirag Shetty created history in the Indonesia Open being played in Jakarta, Indonesia. The men’s doubles pair became the first pair to reach the final of a Super-10 rated tournament. Satwik-Chirag defeated South Korea’s Kangmin and Seo Seung-jae in three games 17-21, 21-19, 21-18 in the semifinals. Satvik-Chirag became the first Indian pair to win the Super-750 French Open title last year. The men’s doubles pair of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked sixth in the world badminton rankings, also won gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Satvik-Chirag did not start well in the first game of the semi-final match. Trailing 3-6, the Indian pair trailed 15-19 and lost the game 17-21, but in the second game, the Indian pair dominated from the start and led 11-4 at half-time. At the end the score was 18-15 but Satwik-Chirag then took the game 21-19. Both were tied at 5-5 in the third game. After this, Satvik-Chirag gained a lead of 12-5. The Korean duo made a comeback to level the score at 16-16, but from here Satvik-Chirag won the match. Badminton rankings are determined by tournament grades. BWF World Ranking tournaments include Super 1000, 750, 500, 300 and Super 100 events. Winner gets points according to ranking. For example, the winner of the Super 1000 competition gets 12 thousand points. Whereas, the winner of Super 100 tournament gets 5 thousand 500 points. Maximum 13 thousand points are available for winning World Championship and Olympics. World ranking is determined based on total points. Apart from the winner, the finalists, semi-finalists and shuttlers participating in the tournament are also awarded points according to their grade and position.
