CoCo Lee, the Hong Kong-born singer-songwriter, passed away at the age of 48 following a suicide attempt on Sunday.
On Wednesday, CoCo’s older sisters, Carol and Nancy Lee, took to social media to announce the heartbreaking news. They revealed that CoCo had been battling depression for several years, and despite seeking professional help and fighting bravely, she ultimately succumbed to the inner demons that plagued her.

“On 2 July, she [attempted] suicide at home and was sent to the hospital. Despite the best efforts of the hospital team to rescue and treat her from her coma, she finally passed away on 5 July.” the sisters shared in a heartfelt statement posted on Facebook and Instagram.
CoCo Lee, a renowned pop star in Asia, achieved tremendous success in the 1990s and early 2000s. Signing with Sony Music Entertainment in 1996, her debut album “CoCo Lee” became the top-selling album in Asia that year.
Starting as a Mandopop singer, she later released albums in Cantonese and English. Her single “Do You Want My Love” charted in the U.S., and in 1999, she released her first English album titled “Just No Other Way.”
Notably, her emotionally charged song “A Love Before Time” from the critically acclaimed film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” received a nomination for Best Original Song at the 2001 Academy Awards. She performed the song live at the prestigious ceremony.
CoCo also made significant contributions to the world of entertainment. She provided the Mandarin voice for the female warrior Mulan in Disney’s “Mulan” and sang the Mandarin version of the movie’s theme song, “Reflection.”
Additionally, she appeared in three films, including Lee Xin’s “Master of Everything” and “No Tobacco.”
CoCo was married to Canadian businessman Bruce Rockowitz, former chief executive of Li & Fung, and she embraced the role of stepmother to his two daughters, although she did not have biological children of her own.
In their Instagram message, CoCo’s sisters acknowledged that 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of her singing career. They expressed gratitude for CoCo’s tireless efforts in paving the way for Chinese singers in the international music scene, as she strived to be a shining star for her fellow Chinese artists.
“As a family of CoCo, we are very grateful and honored to have such an excellent and outstanding sister. We are thankful to God for giving us such a kind angel.” her sisters wrote.
The statement concluded with Carol and Nancy expressing gratitude to the medical staff who cared for CoCo during her final days. They requested that fans honor CoCo’s memory by spreading positivity, embracing her infectious smile, treating others with sincerity, and spreading kindness and love to those around them. They hoped to carry forward CoCo’s mission of sharing love and happiness with everyone she touched.
“Although CoCo’s time in this world was brief, her radiant light will shine on forever!” the sisters concluded their heartfelt message.
