A group hoping to get Eurostar services returned to Kent stations has gathered over 40,000 signatures.
The campaign group made up of residents and business owners decided to start a petition in March 2023, to see how much support there was for the services to return. They have even got support from Ashford Borough Council (ABC), Dartford Borough Council (DBC) and Kent County Council.
The group say that Eurostar train services from London to the continent, calling at Ebbsfleet and Ashford stopped abruptly, mothballing state-of-the-art International stations at those places because of the COVID pandemic.
These services have not resumed , meaning that people living in Kent are now condemned to travel to London (with its attendant emissions) only to go back through Ashford to reach Paris or Brussels and even beyond.
It is absurd that tourists and commuters have to go in the opposite direction just to get across the Channel
The topic has also reached the House of Commons when Ashford MP Damian Green instigated a debate last month. This received support from the Minister of State for Rail at the Department for Transport Huw Merriman, and MPs from across Kent, East Sussex and South London.
The group are now hoping that their campaign will gather further traction as they aim for 50,000 signatures. Yo can add to the petition here.
