One of Britain’s leading convenience store brands, Londis, has officially opened a brand-new store at Chatham Waters.

The official opening of the new Londis store follows a major new affordable rent and shared ownership housing scheme ‘Cavalier Court’ being developed by Peel Waters and Legal & General Affordable Homes also reaching practical completion in the same month at Chatham Waters.

Located in the ground floor unit of The Kell apartment building, which is home to over 200 residents, the new 2,102 sq. ft waterside store is conveniently positioned to provide a useful amenity for local residents, workers on site, and students at the Waterfront UTC.
The well-known retail franchise will bring a great choice of big brands and daily essentials to Chatham Waters.

In addition to providing a convenient shopping experience for residents and the local community, the new Londis store also offers quality onsite coffee, handy grab-and-go hot food options and freshly baked breads and pastries. The team are also looking to source local produce including cheese and wines to sell and showcase at their new Chatham Waters store. Londis’ new store also offers other convenient services, including an on-site cash machine, phone top-up facilities and parcel services.

Pradeep Kumar Velayudan, Franchise Manager for Londis, Chatham Waters said: “Chatham Waters is such a friendly neighbourhood and being embedded within the local community is important to us. As an established and well-loved brand, Londis will be a great addition to the neighbourhood offering not just groceries and essentials, but also a wide range of other useful services on site at our new Londis Chatham Waters store. Officially opening the store is huge step for us and we want to say thank you to everyone who came down to support the event and we look forward to welcoming our neighbours to their new, local Londis.”

With nearly 400 occupied homes, over 200 students studying at the Waterfront UTC and over 200 new affordable homes being developed by Legal & General Affordable Homes at Chatham Waters, the new Londis store will be much welcomed, useful onsite amenity. The arrival of Londis in Chatham Waters also means the creation of 15 new jobs in the retail sector for the local community.

James Whittaker, Executive Director, Peel Waters said: “We’re very happy to see the doors to Londis’ new store at Chatham Waters officially open.

“Chatham Waters is a continuously growing neighbourhood. With a range of residential offerings including build-to-rent, PRS, affordable rent, shared ownership homes and a future care home starting on site imminently, we’re committed to creating a place for everyone. Having a range of onsite amenities is important to supporting this and we have worked closely with Pradeep and the team to ensure this new store is high-quality and responds to the needs of our Chatham Waters community.
“This new store is the start of an exciting waterside retail and leisure offering coming to Chatham Waters, creating new places for our community to enjoy and meet their neighbours, as well as bringing new jobs to the area and boosting the local economy in Medway.”

At a special event marking the official opening of the new store, Mayor of Medway, Cllr Nina Gurung added: “I am very pleased to officially declare open the impressive Londis Convenience Store at Chatham Waters, Gillingham, adjacent to the tranquil, beautiful riverside walks and open public spaces for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike. I’m very happy to learn that alongside premium properties, 200 new affordable homes will also be built at Chatham Waters, and that there are plans in the pipeline to promote exciting annual community events here.

“This highlights the increasing need for local amenities and Peel Waters has done well by attracting Londis, a reputable British convenience store chain to this well-positioned site. As I have said already, our wonderful Borough has immense potential for growth and this is just beginning to be realised; it is no surprise that we are increasingly attracting businesses and investors across all sectors.

“Having visited the brand-new store, I’m impressed with Londis Chatham Waters offering a great range of quality grocery and daily essentials at the residents’ doorstep, alongside additional facilities such as on-site bakery, cash machine, phone top-ups and parcel delivery. The opening of this convenient one-stop shop for multiple services has also created 15 jobs locally, thereby directly boosting our local economy. The excitement at today’s store opening is really palpable and I wish Londis Chatham Waters Franchise Manager Pradeep Kumar Velayudan and his friendly staff team all the success.”
Alongside well-known brands, the new Londis store will also bring along their cost-effective brands to Chatham Waters, including their ‘Farm Fresh’ range which delivers great value, quality fruit and veg along with their ‘Euro Shopper’ brand which offers essential grocery products at permanently low prices.

Chatham Waters is Peel Waters’s biggest regeneration project in the South and has been carefully planned to ensure the former brownfield site delivers a truly inspirational new destination. Over £125 million has been invested into Chatham Waters so far, delivering significant infrastructure improvements to the highways, flood defence and local amenities; including the creation of The Waterfront UTC offering on-site stem-focussed education specialising in construction and engineering; the ASDA superstore and the Mast & Rigging family restaurant; as well as 400 brand-new, award-winning homes and accessible public realm for the community to enjoy.
