Rather than following the choreography and pointing his hand upwards like Emma, Ryan decided to flatten his hand instead. He thought it would be “cool,” even though everyone advised against it. Little did he know that this simple gesture would become his biggest regret.
During the interview, Ryan gestured with his flattened-out hand, referring to it as his “La La Hand.” He admitted, “I thought it’d be cool to put my hand like that, even though everyone told me it wasn’t cool.” It’s clear that Ryan still regrets his decision.
But What’s the Deal with “Hamburger Hands”?
The interviewer then informed Ryan that his unconventional hand gesture is actually a real thing in the dance world.
It’s called “hamburger hands.” Ryan’s background in dance might have led him to believe that it would help him in his role in “La La Land,” but as he humorously confessed, “Hamburger hands Gosling over here… it didn’t help me at all, in the end.”
