IT’S been one of the songs heard all over Germany for the past week and a half.
From Munich to Cologne and now all the way to Stuttgart, Scotland fans have been serenading John McGinn everywhere they go.
John McGinn remains a hugely popular figure with the Tartan Army[/caption]
There have been questions asked about the Aston Villa midfielder’s displays in the two games against Germany and Switzerland – with some calls for him to be DROPPED for tonight’s crunch Group A clash against Hungary.
But it will take a lot more than just two slightly under-par performances – by his ridiculously high standards at least – for the Tartan Army to ever turn on McGinn.
The former St Mirren and Hibs ace has become a talismanic figure for the group, both for his wholehearted displays on the pitch and his infectious enthusiasm off it.
And so, as the Scotland fans made their way by train, tram, underground or on foot to the Stuttgart stadium, it was McGinn’s name that was being belted out.
German media captured one such rendition as hundreds of fans – most bedecked in blue and white – packed the train platform, beers in hand, and signing their hearts out.
“The Scots making their way to the stadium,” was the caption from BW24, a local Stuttgart based media outlet.
McGinn had previously revealed he had a family connection to tonight’s opponents.
The Scotland midfielder has two young cousins who are Hungarian.
And they have split loyalties – with one of them hoping for a Hungary win and the other desperate for SCOTLAND to take the victory tonight.
He said: “When the draw was made my uncle Joe and cousins Márk and Támas were straight in touch.
“The boys were born in Scotland, but live in a town called Sopron and are half-Hungarian.
“Uncle Joe told me this morning that one of them wants Scotland to win and the other wants Hungary.
“All I can say is that I hope young Tamas is sad on Monday morning.
“For them going to school every day, it’s nice for them to share the surname – though I’m not sure their pals believe who their cousin is.”
