Sandwich Infant School in Kent has been awarded a £15k grant after winning a national competition to design a sustainable school, organised by British Gas through its partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB.
The school were among the participants in Team GB and ParalympicsGB’s Get Set for Positive Energy, a free cross-curricular programme delivered in partnership with British Gas that aims to educate young people aged from five to 11 on the importance of saving energy to drive change, get active and build healthy everyday habits.
As part of the sustainable school competition, the children were tasked with looking at how the school would be powered, which lessons would be taught and how children would feel as a result.
Jemima, age 6, from Sandwich Infant School won the competition that received over 2,000 entries. As a result, the school was awarded the British Gas Positive Energy Grant by Team GB athlete, Ashleigh Nelson, and ParalympicsGB athlete, Thomas Young, last week.
The athletes presented the competition winner with a cheque following an interactive session with the school children teaching their Olympic and Paralympic values.
Through Get Set for Positive Energy, British Gas aims to reach up to one million young people and families across the UK by 2028, taking inspiration from the Olympic and Paralympic values to motivate young people to be active in creating a greener future for themselves and their community.
Leanne Bennett, headteacher at Sandwich Infant School, said: “The Design a Sustainable School competition has really inspired our pupils to apply their learnings on renewable energy and sustainable living, thinking outside of the box and having a lot of fun in the process.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our pupils for their achievement and want to give a massive thank you to British Gas, Team GB and ParalympicsGB for making it such an enjoyable and knowledgeable experience. A special shout out goes to Ashleigh Nelson and Thomas Young who the children absolutely loved meeting!
Abi Robins, Director of Responsible Business at British Gas: “We were really impressed by the entries to our competition, and this is testament to the enthusiasm and creativity of schools up and down the country. Sandwich Infant School really stood out to us for their fresh thinking and innovation, and it was clear the children had really considered different ways of how to make their school as sustainable as possible.
“Working towards net zero is a central focus for our business, and this programme of activity aims to engage and educate children on building a more sustainable future. We’re using our partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB to inspire schools to get more active and consider different ways to create a positive impact.
“We’re looking forward to seeing how the children at Sandwich Infant School continue to champion sustainability in their school, both using the prize grant and the educational resources from our Get Set programme. We’re sure they’ll achieve great things!”
The partnership between Team GB, ParalympicsGB and British Gas launched in 2023. The five-year collaboration will last up until the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028.
