Several prominent pro-Israel donors to President Biden’s campaign have voiced their criticism over his recent pledge to pause weapon shipments to Israel in the event of an invasion of Rafah, Hamas’ stronghold in southern Gaza.
This decision has sparked outrage among some members of the Democratic Party who advocate for strong support of Israel.
One of these donors, Haim Saban, an Israeli American Democratic megadonor, sent an email to White House officials expressing his dissatisfaction with Biden’s decision.

In the email, Saban described the decision as a “bad, bad, bad decision” and urged the President to reconsider, stating that it sends a negative message to allies in the region and beyond.
Mark Mellman, another advocate for the Democratic Party, also criticized the move in a statement to Axios, emphasizing that it was a decision with negative implications on multiple levels. He echoed Saban’s sentiment, urging Biden to reconsider the decision.
In a CNN interview that aired on Wednesday, President Biden reaffirmed his position, stating that if Israel were to invade Rafah, he would not supply the weapons historically used to deal with the situation.
He emphasized that while the United States would continue to ensure Israel’s security through measures such as the Iron Dome, it was wrong to provide weapons and artillery shells in this specific scenario.
Some Israelis and American politicians believe that Biden’s decision is an attempt to appeal to the far-left and progressive base of the Democratic Party ahead of the November election.
They argue that this move to halt weapons delivery to Israel is politically motivated and undermines the longstanding support for Israel.
Rafah, a city with over 1 million Palestinians, is currently occupied by thousands of Hamas terrorists and their leader, Yahya Sinwar.
Hamas is known to use hostages, including potentially American citizens, as human shields to deter Israeli incursions. Saban’s email to Biden accused the President of abandoning the goal of defeating Hamas, which the U.S. has expressed in its recent support for Israel.
Saban further criticized the decision, stating that it sends a message that the U.S. is bending to political pressure and abandoning its commitment to doing what is right.
As the chairman and CEO of Saban Capital Group, Saban has been a major supporter of Biden and hosted a significant fundraiser for his 2024 re-election campaign at his Los Angeles home in February.
Mellman, the CEO of Democratic Majority for Israel, a political group that promotes support for Israel among Democratic politicians, expressed his concerns about the potential consequences of this policy shift.
He emphasized that while Biden has been one of the most pro-Israel presidents, there is growing worry and anger within the pro-Israel community over this decision.
The House Oversight Committee has announced that it will be opening an investigation into the Biden administration over its threats to withhold offensive aid from Israel.
This investigation reflects the concerns and discontent expressed by some members of Congress regarding the potential implications of this policy shift.
