Thorne Hedgehog Rescue C.I.C in Ashford are seeking help from a vet in Kent to assist with their rescue hedgehogs.
The Centre no longer have a vet that will see or treat hedgehogs in Kent. They have only found two wthin 50 miles of Kent but they will charge to see the animals, which is more than the rescue centre can afford.
Hedgehogs are a species that is in decline, but the rescue centre are doing what they can to help those that are brough to them. They urgently require more volunteers to cope with the volume of hedgehogs needing help. They would als obenefit from volunteer drivers who are able to travel distances to collect hedgehogs.
The current owner says that they can admit up to 10 animals a day, whilst they already have to care and clean for the 118 hogs already staying. They also attend talks and events, as well as fundraise to be able to afford medication and food.
If the rescue centre cannot get more help, then for the first time ever, they will have to consider whether to close indefinitely. They cannot operate without a vet willing to see them at a reasonable cost, as current vet rates have risen from £100 to £400 per animal.
In just a few hours 2 more hedgehogs have just arrived needing care, from a total of 17 to arrive within the last 36 hours. Volunteers will spend the hours picking off every fly egg before they hatch into maggots.
If you think you can help or if you know of a vet that will assist with this vital work, please contact Thorne Hedgehog Rescue C.I.C on 07825 952201 or via their Facebook page.
