A WOMAN has revealed the nightmare of removing her mum from location sharing on her smartphone after the snooping got “too much”.
Location sharing is a popular feature for family and friends to keep an eye on the whereabouts of loved ones for their safety – but it can become problematic in the wrong hands.
On iPhone, the Find My app lets you keep tabs of each other.
An unnamed 30-year-old has revealed how she decided enough was enough due to her mum checking in and asking too many questions.
“I went out tonight and because of the location got a text asking if I was okay,” explained user OperatingSpeculation on Reddit.
“I responded right away but she always thinks someone else must have my phone because she doesn’t understand why im at said location.
“When I was small we had a family password to share for emergencies.
“She’s only asked for it once before and the 1st time was last month for a similar situation.
“She asked again for it tonight and it ripped me from having fun in the space for the 1st hour.”
After that incident, the woman decided it was time to switch location sharing off.
When her mum realised, she accused her daughter of “punishing me” and “trying to be all in control”.
The woman hit back, saying: “You’re being mean. I’m not punishing you I took away a privilege I allowed bc it was not serving you.
“You had my location but it didn’t matter, you still needed me to triple confirm okayness.”
But now the user is wondering whether she should have waited to explain it to her rather than “ripping the band aid off”.
Fellow Reddit users came out in support of the woman.
“You’re an adult,” one person responded.
“I suspect you’ve already tried a more gentle approach.
“Parents should always be there for their kids imho but you have to let them live their own lives as adults.
“I also found the way she spoke to you over this hostile & disturbing tbh.”
Another wrote: “You’re 30. Stop responding to her constant calls about your location. Cut the cord.”
The woman has since responded to users, saying: “We reached out this morning and she apologized for the nasty comments, and understood my PoV.
“I still love my mom, want her to feel seen and heard without that taking space from my own existence and she gets that.”
See who you're sharing your location with
iPhone's Find My feature is very useful for safety, such as making sure loved ones get home at night.
But you may have forgotten who you are sharing your location with, so it’s always worth checking once in a while.
Go to the Find My app on your iPhone.
Tap the People tab along the bottom.
Here you will see a list of all the people you’ve granted permission to see your location.
Any that you do not wish to share with anymore, just tap their name and then the Stop Sharing My Location button.
