Donald Trump has laid the blame for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine squarely on the United States, specifically accusing President Joe Biden of contributing to the conflict. Speaking on Tuesday about his plans for a second term, Trump addressed the ongoing war and shared his perspective on how the crisis escalated.
“The situation with Russia has been brewing for many years, long before Putin’s infamous demand about NATO and Ukraine,” Trump remarked. “The trouble began when Biden insisted Ukraine should be allowed to join NATO, despite Russia’s clear objections to NATO’s presence on its border.”
Trump expressed sympathy for Russia’s stance, suggesting that Moscow’s concerns about NATO encroachment were understandable. “You can understand Russia’s feelings when they have NATO potentially on their doorstep,” he said, adding that Biden’s decisions during the negotiations were critical mistakes that led to war.

“I said it back then: if Biden kept going down this path, it would lead to war, and here we are,” Trump continued. “This could escalate into something far worse than what we’re seeing now.” The former president also hinted at a broken agreement, claiming that Biden had reneged on a deal that would have satisfied both Russia and Ukraine.
Putin made a similar claim in December, recalling a conversation with Biden in 2021 where the U.S. president suggested delaying Ukraine’s NATO membership for 10 to 15 years. However, Putin did not confirm whether the agreement was ever formalized or if Biden later reneged.

While many in the West view Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as an aggressive land grab, Moscow continues to justify its actions. Trump has vowed to end the war on his first day in office, though he has yet to provide specific details on how he would achieve peace.
His remarks have sparked speculation that his approach may involve pressuring Ukraine to give up occupied territories.
The former president also reiterated his intent to meet with Putin as soon as possible, hoping to initiate talks long before the six-month mark.
However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed rumours of any forthcoming meetings between Putin and Trump and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz by the beginning of January.
