The UK government has confirmed it will not impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) following former US President Donald Trump’s recent measures against the tribunal.
Trump sanctioned the ICC over what he called its “illegitimate targeting of Israel and the US.” However, a spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated, “We support the independence of the ICC. Therefore, we’ve got no plans to sanction individual court officials.”
ICC Investigation Spurs Political Divide
Trump’s decision to sanction the court came after The Hague launched an investigation into Israel’s actions in Gaza. During Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for him in 2024, accusing him of war crimes in Palestinian territories.

While the US condemned the court’s decision, calling it a “dangerous precedent,” the UK took a different stance, emphasizing its commitment to international justice as a signatory to the Rome Statute, which established the ICC.
Calls for a Two-State Solution
The UK’s rejection of Trump’s sanctions follows its earlier dismissal of his proposal to forcibly remove Palestinians from Gaza. Trump suggested turning the region into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” sparking international backlash.
In response, Starmer reiterated his support for a two-state solution, stating in the Commons, “Palestinians must be allowed home, they must be allowed to rebuild, and we should be with them in that rebuild on the way to a two-state solution.”
The ongoing conflict, which began with Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, has resulted in over 46,700 Palestinian deaths, according to Hamas-run authorities, and continues to drive international debate.
