Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s first trip to Washington as UK leader started with camaraderie between him and President Donald Trump. From the outset, Trump described the visit as an “outstanding start,” setting the tone for a press conference filled with mutual admiration.
The two leaders spoke at length about the enduring “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom, reinforcing their commitment to diplomatic collaboration.
One of Starmer’s primary objectives was to persuade Trump to provide a security guarantee for Ukraine in any future peace deal with Russia.

While no concrete agreement emerged, the president of the United States stated that his administration was “working towards a very achievable ceasefire in Ukraine.”
However, his remark that “if it doesn’t happen quickly, it may not happen at all” raised concerns in Kyiv that the U.S. might be open to concessions that favour Russia.

Trade Talks and Economic Uncertainty
Trade relations between the UK and the U.S. took center stage, as Starmer aimed to secure a favorable deal and avoid potential tariffs that could hinder economic growth. The prime minister has worked hard to move the UK away from its “back of the queue” status under former President Obama.
When asked whether Starmer had succeeded in convincing him to avoid trade tariffs on the UK, Trump responded with a chuckle: “He tried.” He praised Starmer’s efforts, joking that the UK leader had “earned whatever the hell they pay him over there.”
Despite the lighthearted exchange, Trump did hint at the possibility of a fair trade deal, saying, “I think there’s a very good chance that in the case of these two great, friendly countries, we could very well end up with a real trade deal where the tariffs wouldn’t be necessary. We’ll see.”
Canada Controversy and Military Commitments
A notable moment came when Starmer was asked about Trump’s recent remark suggesting that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state. Starmer quickly dismissed any tension, stating, “I think you’re trying to find a divide between us that simply doesn’t exist.”

He emphasized the strong ties between the UK and the U.S., making it clear that Canada had not been a topic of discussion.
On the subject of Ukraine, Starmer reinforced Britain’s commitment to maintaining peace, declaring, “The UK is ready to put boots on the ground and planes in the air to support a lasting peace.” His stance highlighted the UK’s dedication to working with allies to ensure stability in Eastern Europe.
A Lighthearted Finish
The press conference concluded on a humorous note, with Trump complimenting Starmer’s British accent. “I would have been president 20 years ago if I had that accent,” he quipped. Throughout the event, Starmer adopted a more assertive, competitive tone—perhaps influenced by Trump’s style.
“We believe it’s not taking part that counts. What counts is winning. If you don’t win, you don’t deliver,” Starmer stated, echoing Trump’s rhetoric. “We’re both in a hurry to get things done. And that’s what the UK and US do—when we work together, we win and we get things done.”
With no definitive trade agreement or Ukraine security pledge secured, the trip leaves some key issues unresolved. However, the diplomatic warmth displayed between the two leaders suggests ongoing discussions and potential collaborations in the future.
