Isolation is a new threat to addicts worldwide. Covid19 is a looming threat to families worldwide, but isolation is a new threat to addicts.
Addiction is best described as an isolator. The relationship the addict has with their addiction is mixed with guilt and shame. On one part there is a constant need to fulfil your addiction, on the other is the way in which the addiction pulls you further away from your family and friends.
Addiction moves from being a cloud over your head to become an all consuming cloud around you. We all know society’s brutal rejection of any who stray from its norms and regulations. What worse atrocity than to get hooked on drugs, pornography, self harm or alcohol?

The one point emphasized by rehabilitation facilities to recovering addicts is to keep a busy schedule by filling your day with activities. From day to day AA meetings for example, to keeping constant touch with your sponsor. These physical activities have had to come to a stop since the civid19 shutdown.
So how does one stay connected under isolation? The potential each day has as it mounts into weeks and possibly months? Too many thoughts in your head? Too much time on your hands, alone?
This is what we call the mushroom effect. You see isolation is the perfect breeding ground for addiction to flourish.
The only glimmer of hope here is the potential of the internet. As work meetings have moved online, so have meetings for those in recovery.
The Anonymous rehabilitation system now hosts all its meetings online. Although it may not be the same as physical meetings, it is a great way to stay connected to the world and those that are going through similar trials.

So whether it is ensuring that you stay triumphant against your addiction, or checking in for help my heart goes out to you for each day. You are doing okay.
