In a statement from No. 10 this morning, they confirmed “The King has been pleased to approve the appointment of the Rt Hon David Cameron as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs”.
It also set out that David Cameron has been made a peer. “His Majesty has also been pleased to confer the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom for life upon David Cameron.”
David Cameron’s return has sparked comparisons to Gordon Brown bringing back Peter Mandelson in 2008 when his government was also facing an uphill struggle with public opinion ahead of the election.
Rishi Sunak’s decision to bring back David Cameron to the role of Foreign Secretary is brave, given the former PM’s outspoken opposition to a number of the Government’s key policies.
Mr Cameron’s return to the political scene has raised questions about the process of appointment. Despite not being an MP, he can become Foreign Secretary through a peerage granted by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister.
