Police presence was intensified in the capital as hundreds of thousands of people gathered for one of the largest political marches in British history.
However, amidst the peaceful protesters, clashes erupted between police and certain groups attempting to reach the Cenotaph in central London.
As the day unfolded, a large crowd of individuals carrying St George’s flags could be seen walking along the Embankment, passionately chanting “England till I die.”
Despite a line of police officers attempting to prevent them from reaching Whitehall, the crowd managed to push through, with some even shouting, “Let’s have them,” as officers resorted to using batons to maintain control.
Meanwhile, in another part of Westminster, four teenage boys carrying Palestine flags were confronted by a group of counter-protesters. The police intervened and instructed the boys to leave the area to avoid further escalation.
Throughout the day, various chants were heard, reflecting the diverse sentiments amongst the protesters. Some chanted, “We want our country back,” while others expressed derogatory remarks like, “Allah, who the fuck is Allah.”
These contrasting slogans highlight the range of opinions present during the march.
Further clashes with police took place in Chinatown with counter-protesters chanting: “You’re not English any more” towards officers.
Police managed to disperse the crowd, splitting them into two smaller groups which were seen running in the direction of Piccadilly Circus. One man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife and another for possession of a baton.
And in one fell swoop, 82 people have been arrested on Tachbrook Street in Pimlico, south London – with more counter-protesters being held inside the White Swan pub by police.
