‘Beast from the East’ warning as weather maps show 700-mile blizzard to smash into Scotland

SCOTS have been warned to brace for a second ‘Beast from the East’ snowstorm in weeks as weather maps reveal more blizzards are on the way.

Forecasters have warned that very challenging conditions are set to sweep in as a brutal cold blast batters the country.

Weather maps have revealed that a 712-mile wall of snow is set to descend[/caption]

And the grim conditions could mimic those seen in 2018 during the horrendous Beast from the East.

This paralysed the nation seven years ago after it brought freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall and widespread travel disruption to the UK.

Weather maps have now revealed that more snowstorms are on the way and will hit Scotland on Wednesday, February 12.

And they also show that it will be freezing temperatures as a huge section of the UK is covered in the white stuff.

A huge 712-mile wall of snow running from Durness in the Scottish Highlands right down to Ashford, in Kent, will descend in ten days.

The whole of Scotland will be affected with the exception of some areas along the west coast and the islands.

Around two centimetres of snow is expected to fall every hour and will get progressively worse throughout the day.

The Scottish Borders is expected to be among the worst affected areas, with around 22cm of snow expected to fall over 24 hours.

And it is set to bring sub-zero conditions which will cause the mercury levels to drop to freezing conditions.

The Highlands are expected to experience temperatures of around -4C while most of the rest of Scotland will see it hover around -2C.

Severe Weather EU has also warned of the mid-February freeze and said it is the result of a Polar Vortex heading to the UK from Europe.

It previously posted: “Are you ready? The potential for a significant deformation of the Polar Vortex and its split is increasing”.

While the Met Office‘s long-range weather outlook states: “High pressure will sit close to (and probably to the east of) the UK in this period.

“Consequently, southern and eastern areas are likely to see the driest conditions, with lightest winds, which could lead to overnight frost and fog with temperatures a little below normal.

“Further north and west, there is a risk of incursions of Atlantic air and fontal systems at times, which would bring some rain here, but with milder temperatures.

“There is a very low chance that if the high orientates in such a way that a more easterly (rather than southerly/southeasterly) flow develops, a spell of much colder conditions could develop across the UK, with a risk of wintry showers in some parts.”

UK 5 day weather forecast

This evening and tonight:

Light rain on western hills where it will be murky and foggy, but a dry night for most. Chilly with a frost and patchy fog forming beneath clear skies, mainly in the southeast. Becoming wet and windy in the northwest.

Monday:

Increasingly windy in the northwest as rain spreads slowly southeastwards. More settled elsewhere, the best of the sunshine across northern England and Wales, though turning cloudier in the southeast.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Rather windy and mild on Tuesday with rain at times, heavy in places. Generally dry on Wednesday and Thursday with sunny spells. Turning somewhat colder with overnight frosts becoming widespread.

Its forecast for the end of the month warns that frost and rain is on the way as we head into March.

It reads: “It is most likely that high pressure to the east or northeast of the UK will dominate at first in some form or another.

“But there is a weak signal for a more unsettled spell in the second half of the month, before signals become indistinguishable from climatology by the start of March.

“Temperatures may be below average at first, with overnight frosts, but could return to near average or even rise a little above average later.

“Precipitation amounts, are likely to be below average at first, though a few wintry showers are possible in the east, and perhaps some rain in the west, but amounts may return to near-normal later in the month.”
