Chancellor Rachel Reeves is under scrutiny following a BBC investigation that uncovered concerns about her expenses while working at Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS).
The report revealed that whistleblowers had raised detailed complaints about Reeves’ use of company funds during her time as a senior manager at the bank. Allegations include spending on a £400 leaving meal, handbags worth over £200, and perfume as a gift for her boss.
Despite these claims, a spokesperson for Reeves stated that she had no knowledge of any investigation, always adhered to expense rules, and left on good terms.
CV Controversy Adds to the Debate
Further questions have been raised over inconsistencies in Reeves’ CV, particularly on LinkedIn.
Last year, her profile was changed from describing her HBOS role as “economist” to “retail banking” after accusations of embellishment.

Additionally, the BBC found discrepancies regarding her time at the Bank of England, where she had claimed to have worked for nearly a decade. In reality, she left nine months earlier than stated and spent part of her tenure studying for a Master’s at the London School of Economics.
A spokesperson for Rachel Reeves attributed the errors to an administrative mistake by a team member, adding that she had not personally reviewed the details before publication.
Ministers Defend Reeves Amid Political Backlash
Despite the controversy, senior Labour ministers have strongly defended Rachel Reeves.
Science Secretary Peter Kyle dismissed the BBC’s findings, calling the reporting “inaccurate” and insisting there was no formal investigation at HBOS. Health Secretary Wes Streeting also backed Reeves, praising her as a “serious economist” tackling an immensely challenging job.
However, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch took to social media to criticize the chancellor, stating:
“Keir Starmer said ‘restoring trust in politics is the great test of our era.’ Until Reeves comes clean—not just about her CV, but about the circumstances in which she left HBOS—no one will take him seriously.”
