A man has been jailed after he was quickly identified as the suspect who tried to snatch cash from a woman in Canterbury.
Andrew Mullen was given a four year sentence at the city’s Crown Court on Thursday 13th February 2025 for attempted robbery and possession of knife. The sentence followed an investigation into an attempted robbery in Canterbury High Street, which took place on Saturday 2nd November 2024.
That morning, the victim had been taking money from an ATM when she became aware of a man on a bicycle behind her. As she went to put the cash in her pocket, the man, who police later identified as Mullen, grabbed her hand. The victim tried to crouch down to keep the money in her grasp before a struggle ensured in which Mullen elbowed the woman and then fell from his bike. He rode off, while the victim went into the bank and the police were called.
Detectives managed to identify Mullen from CCTV images, which showed Mullen on his bike on the day of the offence, and he was arrested later the same month. When officers detained him, he was found to be in possession of a knife. The 49 year old, of no fixed abode, was charged with the offences in December 2024 before admitting them in court in January 2025.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Daniel Moles said ‘Kent Police is absolutely determined that people should be able to enjoy the county’s town and city centres without interference from people like Mullen.’
