Germany has advised NATO to avoid a direct military confrontation with Russia. German Chancellor Olaf Schulz fears World War III could erupt if NATO and Russia clash. In an interview with Der Spiegel, Chancellor Schulz also defended Russia’s decision to immediately suspend its oil and gas imports. Germany is dependent on Russia for its energy needs. This is why, despite being a member of NATO, Germany has always been soft on Russia. Germany has also recently sent a limited amount of military equipment to Ukraine due to pressure from the United States and other NATO countries. Olaf Schulz has faced criticism at home and abroad for not providing Ukraine with heavy weapons such as tanks and howitzers. The German government has repeatedly spoken out in Ukraine’s favor, but the rest of the world has not taken as much action against Russia. Chancellor Schulz was asked why he thought giving Ukraine a tank could lead to a nuclear war. In response, he said no such rule had been drafted stating that Germany could be considered a party to the war in Ukraine. “It is very important that we think carefully and work closely with each other,” said the German chancellor. Defending NATO’s involvement in this tension is a top priority for me. That’s why I don’t focus on the election and don’t allow myself to be bothered by harsh comments. Taking even one wrong step can have dire consequences. Schulz defended his decision not to immediately suspend Russian gas imports to Germany in response to the invasion of Ukraine. “I don’t think a ban on gas will end the war,” he said. If Putin had feared economic sanctions, he would never have started this terrible war. Secondly, you people think that it was all about money, but this is about a dramatic economic crisis and saving millions of jobs and factories from damage. If it closes, its doors will never open again.
