New Delhi, Dt
The country is now preparing to introduce GST on packaged food items and grains. It is learned that the issue is likely to be included in the agenda of the GST Council meeting to be held in Chandigarh next week. These items are likely to be subject to 5 per cent GST. This was agreed at a meeting of the group of GST ministers last week. Accordingly, tax will be levied on all products which are not registered under any brand but sell items under a local name. At present there is no GST on such items. If such items are taxed, their prices are set to go up. The government will no longer allow tax breaks for foods where items are sold under one name by making packets but no claim is made as a brand. A meeting of the GST Council is scheduled to be held on June 3 and 4 at Chandigarh. A day before that, i.e. on June 8, a meeting of GST officials will be held. The meeting will also discuss the challenge of such recovery.
