For employees below 18 years of age, the nomination letter has to be signed by the parents or guardians as per the existing provisions. Last week, the government raised the upper age limit for recruitment under the Agneepath scheme for the year 207 from 21 to 3 years. Youngsters in the age group of 17 and a half to 21 years will be included for a period of four years. While 3% of them will be included in the regular service later. The youth recruited under the new scheme will be called ‘Agniveer’. After a period of four years, all firefighters will return to society, the Air Force said. Exiting firefighters will be given the opportunity to apply for enrollment in the regular cadre of the Air Force. A certificate will be issued for the skills acquired by each firefighter, which will become part of their biodata. The application will be considered by a centralized board in a transparent manner and a maximum of 5 per cent of the special batch of native firefighters will be included in the Air Force on the basis of performance. The Air Force said leave permission would be granted in accordance with the organization’s requirements. Each firefighter will be given 30 days annual leave, while sick leave will depend on the medical report. The firefighters will be given a separate rank in the Indian Air Force, which will be different from any other current rank. Firefighters will have to accept all the terms and conditions of the new scheme. Elaborating on the Navy’s plan to recruit firefighters under the scheme, Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi said the Navy headquarters would issue comprehensive guidelines for recruitment by June 4. He said that the first batch would start the training program by November 31. Lt. Gen. Puri said the government is moving towards implementing the Agneepath scheme. He appealed to the youth to end their protest. Lt. Gen. Ponnappa said the first batch of 5,000 personnel would join the training program in the first and second week of December and the second batch would be involved in its training around February 8.
