The Crown Prosecution Service stated that critical witnesses had withdrawn and new evidence had emerged, resulting in the conclusion that there was no longer a realistic chance of conviction. Greenwood expressed relief through a statement released on his behalf.

His contract with United is set to expire in June 2025. When questioned about the situation during United’s current tour of the United States, manager Erik ten Hag stated that he had shared his opinions on the matter. Still, it was up to others within the club to decide.
It is now understood that the decision-making process is nearing its conclusion, and an announcement is expected before the Wolves game.
