Huge American Flag-Burning Protests Erupt As Iran Vows Revenge For Deadly 'Israeli Strike'

Reading Time: 3 mins read

Huge American flag-burning protests have erupted across the Middle East as Iranian protesters gather to condemn the Israeli airstrike against Iran's consulate in Syria on Monday.

The strike, widely attributed to Israel, demolished Iran's consulate in Damascus and resulted in the death of eight people, including two Iranian generals.

Photos and videos from Tehran show hundreds of protesters shouting anti-Israeli and anti-US slogans while burning US and Israeli flags. The demonstrations are a clear display of frustration and anger towards the Israeli strike and its perceived implications.

Iran, along with one of its key proxies, has vowed to respond to the attack. The country's Supreme National Security Council met to decide on a “required” response, with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stating, “We will make them regretful about the crime and similar acts.”

Israel has a history of targeting military officials from Iran, which supports militant groups fighting against Israel in Gaza. However, the strike in Damascus on Monday escalated the conflict as it targeted an Iranian diplomatic mission.

It remains uncertain whether Iran will directly respond to the strike, risking a dangerous confrontation with Israel and its ally, the US, or if it will continue to rely on proxies such as Lebanon's Hezbollah militia and Yemen's Houthi rebels.

The airstrike in Syria resulted in the deaths of General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who led the elite Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016, as well as his deputy, General Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimi, and five other officers.

Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group, stated that Zahedi played a crucial role in advancing their work in Lebanon.

Hezbollah has vowed revenge for the attack, stating, “This crime will certainly not pass without the enemy receiving punishment and revenge.”

Meanwhile, Syrian Prime Minister Hussein Arnous confirmed that rescue workers are still searching for bodies under the rubble of the Iranian embassy in Damascus.

Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza nearly six months ago, Iran's proxies have increased their attacks, leading to near-daily cross-border exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel, as well as frequent Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping.

Iran also backs Hamas, the ruling party in Gaza, which attacked Israel on October 7.

Israel, which rarely acknowledges strikes against Iranian targets, has refrained from commenting on the latest attack in Syria. However, a military spokesman has blamed Iran for a drone attack against a naval base in southern Israel.

Israel has grown increasingly impatient with the daily exchanges of fire with Hezbollah and warned of the possibility of a full-fledged war. Houthi rebels have also been launching long-range missiles towards Israel, further escalating tensions.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized that the country is engaged in a war on multiple fronts, both offensively and defensively.

He stated, “We operate everywhere, every day, to prevent our enemies from gaining strength and to make it clear that the price for action against Israel will be a heavy one.”
