On a flight from Sydney, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand, a LATAM Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner experienced a sudden and dramatic dip, causing around 50 passengers to be injured. Witnesses described the incident as the plane dipping into a nose dive for a few seconds, causing passengers to slam into the cabin's roof.
The incident occurred about an hour before the flight was scheduled to land in Auckland. Passengers onboard the aircraft were caught off guard by the sudden drop, with one passenger stating that he had just dozed off when the plane unexpectedly plummeted.

Fortunately, he had his seatbelt on, but others were not as fortunate. One passenger who was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident ended up on the roof of the plane, according to witness accounts.
The airline, LATAM Airlines, referred to the incident as a “technical event” that caused a strong movement on the aircraft. However, passengers claim that they did not receive any announcements from the captain regarding the incident. The flight crew and fellow passengers tended to the injured until the plane landed safely in Auckland.
Emergency services were prepared for the arrival of the flight, with paramedics and more than 10 emergency vehicles waiting at the airport. Approximately 50 people were treated at the scene for mostly mild injuries, while 13 individuals were transported to a hospital. One passenger was reported to be in serious condition.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was en route to Santiago, Chile as its final destination. However, due to the incident, the flight had to be canceled and rescheduled for the following day. LATAM Airlines is providing food and accommodation to the affected passengers.
Following the incident, the pilot of the plane reportedly visited the back of the cabin to address concerned passengers. According to one passenger, the pilot explained that he had briefly lost instrumentation before it suddenly returned.
LATAM Airlines expressed regret for the inconvenience and injuries caused by the incident, emphasizing their commitment to safety as a priority. The airline assured passengers that safety remains a key aspect of their operational standards.
