Kemi Badenoch has caused quite a stir with her bold views on food, particularly her dismissal of sandwiches as “real food.”
In an interview with The Spectator, the Conservative Party leader shared her unapologetically unconventional stance on lunch, suggesting that sandwiches are best suited for breakfast, not midday meals.
Asked about her approach to work and relaxation, Badenoch dismissed the concept of “decompressing” and revealed that she doesn’t even take a proper lunch break. “Lunch is for wimps,” she declared, explaining that she often has food brought to her while she works.

“I have food brought in and I work and eat at the same time. There’s no time. Sometimes, I’ll get a steak… I’m not a sandwich person. I don’t think sandwiches are real food, it’s what you have for breakfast.”
Adding to her bold food opinions, Badenoch stated, “I will not touch bread if it’s moist,” further emphasizing her aversion to the humble sandwich.
Her remarks, whether intentionally or not, bring to mind the infamous moment from over a decade ago when then-opposition leader Ed Miliband became an internet meme for his awkward attempt at eating a bacon sandwich.
The prime minister’s spokesperson later humorously responded to Badenoch’s comments, saying, “Keir Starmer was surprised to hear the leader of the opposition has a steak brought in for lunch.”
He continued, “The prime minister is quite happy with a sandwich lunch. It’s a great British institution – I believe it brings in £8bn to the UK economy.” The spokesperson also shared that the PM enjoys a classic tuna sandwich or the occasional cheese toastie.
Badenoch didn’t just stop at food. She also took a swipe at those demanding immediate policy revelations just a month into her tenure, stating, “Trying to get people to be patient is one of the big challenges. People want instant gratification.”
Her comments on leadership also drew attention, with Badenoch likening her role as leader of the Conservative Party to running a “start-up” and pledging to deliver plenty of “red meat” in her 2029 election manifesto.
The interview even saw Badenoch compare herself to Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen, a leader initially admired but who meets a tragic end. Badenoch described Daenerys as “a much misunderstood character,” sparking further intrigue into her leadership philosophy.
Known for her sharp remarks, Badenoch’s interview has added fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding her controversial positions, including comments on maternity pay and civil servants.
Despite her polarizing views, she remains unapologetic, stating earlier this year, “I never have gaffes, because I think very carefully about what I say.”
