A man from Maidstone has been found guilty of the attempted murder of a police officer.
Robert Jenner repeatedly stabbed a constable with a pair of scissors, after patrols had attended his home in connection with allegations of indecent exposure. The assault happened during the evening of 15th June 2023, following a report a man had been seen running naked in Mote Park.
The suspect’s description matched that of Jenner, who had been released from prison just two days earlier for previous indecent exposure offences. Enquiries led officers to his flat in Albion Place. They arrived at around 8pm but Jenner refused to let them in. Efforts to engage with him were unsuccessful and he barricaded his front door with a sofa.
Access was eventually gained by officers and Jenner was seen to be completely naked and had fled into a darkened room.
To enter the same room, one of the constables had to climb over the sofa which had been used as the barricade, and he was then immediately attacked. Armed with a pair of scissors, Jenner repeatedly stabbed the officer. He caused multiple and serious injuries to his head, face, neck and limbs.
The assault only ended when colleagues were able to intervene and restrain Jenner, who was then arrested and taken into custody. The injured officer was taken to hospital and had to undergo extensive surgery after sustaining over 20 separate wounds.
It is clear Jenner poses a serious and substantial threat to the public
Jenner was charged with attempted murder and pleaded not guilty. A trial took place at Maidstone Crown Court in his absence, as he repeatedly refused to leave his cell. On Tuesday 10th December 2024, he was convicted by a jury. Sentencing will take place at the same court on a date yet to be confirmed.
Chief Superintendent Neil Loudon said ‘Jenner carried out a sustained and savage attack which lasted more than 20 seconds and has led to some of the worst injuries to a police officer I have ever seen. It is only by pure chance that none of these injuries proved to be fatal. This incident highlights the level of risk our officers can face when attending incidents and of their willingness to face danger to protect others.’
