The Supreme Court has rejected a petition filed against the SIT report on the 2002 riots in Gujarat. In that report, 8 people, including the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, were given a clean chit. A Special Investigation Committee (SIT) set up to probe the riots had given a clean chit to the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Zakia Jaffrey, wife of late former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffrey, had filed a petition against him in the Supreme Court. That application has been rejected by the Supreme Court. Ehsan Jaffrey was killed in the violence that erupted in the Gulberg Society in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, during the 2002 riots. Ehsan Jafri was killed by a mob in the February 8, 2006 massacre at Gulberg Society in Ahmedabad. His widow Zakia Jaffrey had filed an application in the Supreme Court challenging the SIT report. The SIT, in its closure report dated February 8, 2017, had found that there was not enough evidence to prosecute nine people, including Narendra Modi and senior government officials. A day after a fire broke out in the S-3 compartment of the Sabarmati Express in Godhra, the violence escalated, killing eight people, including former MP Ehsan Jafri. When the coach of Sabarmati Express was set on fire, 4 car workers were killed and then riots broke out in Gujarat.
