A man has been arrested on suspicion of having a knife during the far-right chaos that took place in London this afternoon.
The incident occurred as groups clashed with police while chanting “England till I die” and waving St George’s flags in the air. These clashes took place during the Armistice Day celebrations, with the groups attempting to break through the Cenotaph.
The situation escalated as the groups started to throw bottles at the police, which later turned into throwing missiles.
The tension in the capital was palpable as the police tried to maintain control. However, the majority of the group has since been dispersed, according to a statement issued by the Metropolitan Police on Twitter.
The statement read, “A group of counter-protestors who left Whitehall and moved into Chinatown confronted and threw missiles at officers who tried to engage with them. Additional officers have been deployed to the area to identify, locate, and deal with those involved. Our priority is keeping the public safe.
“We will not tolerate disorder in central London today. Officers who intercepted this group have arrested a man on suspicion of possession of a knife. The majority of the group have dispersed, but officers remain in the area.”
The chaos unfolded as organisers predicted that half a million people would gather in Central London to call for a ceasefire in Israel’s war against Hamas.
Pro-Palestine marches have been taking place across London in response to the lethal attack launched on October 7. In response to these marches, far-right groups called on people to “protect” the Cenotaph.
