China’s panicked response to the Covid pandemic is laid bare in a recently leaked secret memo, which reveals that the Chinese government ordered scientists to destroy all early coronavirus samples from their labs just two days after the world was informed about the virus.
The memo, translated and uncovered by US Right to Know (USRTK), exposes the extent of Beijing’s efforts to suppress information during the early days of the pandemic.

Intelligence officials assert that the destruction of these early samples hindered efforts to trace the origin of the virus and investigate the possibility of a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where researchers were conducting experiments on bat coronaviruses.
The Chinese government’s order, dated January 3, 2020, demanded that labs share their samples with designated high-level institutions for testing and subsequently destroy them.
Labs that possessed samples prior to January 3 were instructed to either share them with the government or destroy them immediately.
The memo also emphasized strict enforcement, warning of severe consequences for non-compliance and prohibiting the release of any relevant information without authorization.
Scientists were effectively silenced, unable to communicate their findings to the public without government approval. The order stressed the need to eliminate safety hazards promptly and ensure foolproof biosafety measures.
The significance of these early virus samples cannot be overstated, as they are crucial for understanding the characteristics of Covid and unraveling the origins of the pandemic.
However, Chinese censorship and the destruction of material have posed significant challenges for officials investigating the outbreak’s beginnings.
China even took down a mysterious database suspected of containing unpublished data on new viruses and concealed bat samples, further impeding research efforts.
Virginie Courtier-Orgogozo, an evolutionary biologist, highlights the importance of accessing additional sequences from the early days to shed light on what transpired in Wuhan in 2019 and discern between different scenarios.
However, the Chinese army’s involvement in the construction of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as revealed in leaked emails obtained by USRTK, raises further concerns.
These messages expose the ties between the Chinese army and the lab, indicating potential military research activities and personnel with connections to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
It is no surprise that suspicions of a lab leak have persisted, given the mounting evidence and revelations over the past two years.

Scientists, researchers, and governments are determined to uncover the truth behind the origins of Covid, and the Chinese government’s attempts to suppress information and destroy samples only fuel the desire for answers.
The gravity of these allegations necessitates a transparent investigation to reveal the basis for Beijing’s alleged cover-up during the initial outbreak, which, if true, could have contained the virus within China.
